Transforming Labor Monitoring with Intelligent Ultrasound

Childbirth remains one of the most monitored yet least digitized clinical environments. During labor, healthcare professionals rely on a patchwork of monitoring devices, manual examinations, and intermittent assessments to safeguard mother and baby. These approaches are often invasive, uncomfortable, and limited in their ability to detect complications early—introducing unnecessary risk at one of the most critical moments in care.

LucidWave addresses this gap

Advances in AI‑driven, continuous ultrasound create a powerful opportunity to redefine intrapartum monitoring. By moving from episodic, manual checks to real‑time, automated insight, clinicians gain faster, more accurate decision support—while reducing physical burden on both mothers and staff. Earlier detection of potential issues leads to safer deliveries and better outcomes for families and hospitals alike.

The Solution: LucidWave

LucidWave is an advanced continuous ultrasound monitoring platform designed specifically for labor and delivery. It delivers real‑time, AI‑powered insights into key labor metrics—such as fetal position, progression of labor, and risk indicators—without restricting movement or comfort.

The platform combines:

  • A compact LucidWave Hub for signal management,

  • sterile, disposable ultrasound patches, and

  • A station for visualization and data processing,

all powered by patented PMUT (MEMS‑based) ultrasound technology. This enables high‑quality imaging at significantly lower acoustic output, making LucidWave suitable for long‑duration monitoring. The system integrates seamlessly with standard clinical and consumer devices, supporting modern, flexible workflows.

By replacing subjective manual assessments with continuous, objective data, LucidWave reduces risk, improves efficiency, and elevates the standard of care during delivery.

The LucidWave project has developed up to TRL 5 with an EIC Transition Grant.

Scalable Business Model

  • Capital equipment sales: LucidWave Hub systems to hospitals and delivery centers

  • Recurring revenue: Disposable sterile ultrasound patches (two per childbirth)

This model combines predictable recurring revenue with strong hospital lock‑in and predictable usage patterns.

Market Opportunity

LucidWave targets the intrapartum fetal monitoring market, with an initial focus on developed healthcare systems in the U.S. and Europe. The company is positioned to enter hospital labor and delivery units—where the need for improved safety, efficiency, and patient experience is strongest, and willingness to adopt innovation is high.
